How Do Women Experience an Abortion? What Are the Experiences with an Abortion?
The experience of an abortion varies greatly among women— both physically and emotionally/mentally. The decision-making process, the procedure itself, and the period afterward are all experienced in highly individual ways.
Some women decide quickly and feel no significant internal conflict, later expressing that they do not regret their decision. However, from our counseling experience, we know that many women facing an unplanned pregnancy, emerging concerns, or difficult circumstances experience intense internal conflict, feeling torn between different choices.
Many women describe making the decision to abort under immense pressure: they don’t know how they could manage life with a child, even though they often deeply wish they could. In such cases, women often report that the abortion was a traumatic experience. It’s not uncommon for women to suffer both in the short and long term, struggling to process this life-altering event internally.
This is why it’s so important to confront your feelings and thoughts honestly beforehand. If a woman already senses during the decision-making period that an abortion would be devastating for her, it’s crucial to explore possible alternatives and solutions and seek support.
