Where to Get the Abortion Pill?
No matter where you live, the abortion pill can only be provided or prescribed by a medical professional. This regulation has been implemented in every English-speaking country for the sake of women's health.
The question of whether any doctor can make the abortion pill available is answered differently for each country as follows:
USA
In the USA, only doctors who are certified under the Mifepristone REMS Program may prescribe the abortion pill. It is only filled at select pharmacies. In most cases, the prescribing doctor provides the abortion pill.
British Isles
GB
In Great Britain, only doctors at hospitals or licensed abortion clinics may prescribe the abortion pill, which can be picked up in person at the clinic or delivered by post.
Northern Ireland
Only the Health and Social Care Trusts offer the abortion pill in Northern Ireland. No GP or private clinic can provide mifepristone.
Republic of Ireland
Any GP may provide the abortion pill in the Republic of Ireland but has the right to refuse on moral grounds.
Canada
Any doctor or nurse practitioner who has taken the training to administer the abortion pill can prescribe it in Canada. Usually, these medical providers are specialized in abortion. Only participating pharmacies fill the abortion pill.
Australia
Any GP, gynecologist, or nurse practitioner may prescribe the abortion pill in Australia. Any community pharmacy may dispense it.
New Zealand
EMA (early medical abortion) medicines may be dispensed at any pharmacy in New Zealand and can be prescribed by any certified primary care provider.
South Africa
In South Africa, only designated nurses, midwives, and doctors with special abortion training can provide the abortion pill on the premises of their clinic.
ℹ️ Doctors, medical personnel, and pharmacists are not required by law to participate in abortions. They are given the right to refuse on moral grounds.
