What is the abortion pill?
The abortion pill is one possible method to perform an abortion. This method is also called medication abortion because it involves taking pills. Unlike vacuum aspirations, this method does not involve a surgical procedure.
First, a medication containing the active ingredient Mifepristone is taken, which keeps the embryo from receiving nutrients, causing it to succumb to starvation. A second medication (active ingredient Misoprostol) causes the expulsion of the embryo and placenta. This process typically takes several days to complete and is accompanied by bleeding and cramping. Therefore, taking the abortion pill should be supervised by a medical doctor.
