What to Expect after Taking the Abortion Pill
The effect of Mifeprex® is usually quite subtle. Most women have very few physical sensations during the first 48 hours of a medical abortion, although some women experience nausea, fever, or dizziness. Cramping and bleeding commonly start within hours of taking the second pill (misoprostol).
Here is what happens inside her body upon taking the first of the two-pill regimen:
After taking the abortion pill (mifepristone), the flow of the pregnancy-sustaining hormone, progesterone, is blocked. As a result, the embryo is no longer supplied with nutrients and oxygen. It loses its attachment to the uterine wall and succumbs to starvation.
Two to three days later, a second medication containing the active ingredient misoprostol is taken, which triggers uterine contractions. Bleeding usually commences within a few hours as the uterus is emptied and the embryo expelled. This process is generally associated with intense cramping and abdominal pain. The embryo may be recognisable during the expulsion phase.
Throughout this process, immediate medical assistance should be available – in case of complications such as haemorrhaging or high fever.
ℹ️ Contraindications, including possible allergies to the active ingredients, should be ruled out beforehand by having a pre-abortion screening.
Post-abortal bleeding may continue for several weeks, and hormone levels also take time to readjust. After two weeks, an elective follow-up appointment is recommended to determine whether the embryo and placental tissue have been completely expelled. If the termination is incomplete, a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure may need to be performed.
It is advisable to refrain from strenuous physical activities, swimming/bathing, and sexual intercourse for several weeks after a medical abortion. Any questions or concerns can be discussed with the medical provider. It may take some time to heal physically and emotionally.
Overall, abortion pill experiences vary considerably, both bodily and mentally.
