Home Use of Mifepristone
The legal requirements in preparation for taking the abortion pill differ from region to region. Find out whether a prior medical examination, ultrasound, consultation or wait time is required and know the cut-off dates by going to Telehealth Abortion.
Even where not required, a medical examination and consultation is recommended to avoid complications and contraindications (e.g. allergies to the active ingredients, ectopic pregnancy).
If picking up the medication at an abortion clinic, the first medication, Mifegyne® (mifepristone), is usually taken under medical supervision before leaving the clinic.
Mifepristone cuts off the embryo’s nutrient supply, causing its demise. This, however, does not usually lead to the expulsion of the embryo. Therefore, a medication containing misoprostol is taken two to three days later. While this medication can be taken at home, medical backup should always be available in case of more severe side effects.
Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin that causes the uterus to contract. Taking misoprostol usually triggers the expulsion of the embryo, accompanied by heavy bleeding and cramping. This segment of the abortion is often experienced alone, at home.
When ordering the abortion pill online via telemedicine, remote access to medical advice is usually available. The absence of face-to-face contact may amplify the sense of isolation often felt during a medical abortion.
Maybe you are considering a medical abortion because you feel more comfortable at home or do not want anyone to know about it. At the same time, perhaps you are concerned about the actual experience and the after-effects?
